The unexpected problems with Virtual Reality porn

First of all, don’t worry this article is safe for work. :)

We love porn. I mean, we as human beings of course. We also do love gaming. It is clear why these two are the very first ones being changed by VR. But while gaming can be go full monty with VR, the porn industry will face unexpected problems.

How do we consume porn nowadays? We are merely passive consumers, and there’s not much changed since the first introduction of peep shows – did you know btw that it can be traced back to the 15th century? I mean the browser window showing pornographic images is not much different from the offline ‘lady in the room watched by men through a window’. It is as old as human history. The varieties changed a lot, but the format didn’t. It’s still passive, even if we talk about porn chatrooms or services like LiveJasmin.

And this is the problem, it supposed to be passive. The consumer wants to watch and look. He (or she!) doesn’t want to be in the shoot, nor part of the clip. It makes him awkward. There’s a great difference between going to a swinger club, using escort service, or just even good old fashioned home humping, and between watching a porn at home with all the anonymity you can have.

In VR porn, in its current stage, you much likely watch a highly detailed 180° video – there’s no point for 360° where you can catch up with the camera crew as well, right? – where they can follow the “hero’s” viewpoint. It’s super-real. Early testers even complained it’s so real, that they feel like they’re cheating their partners. It’s creepy for some, and also it’s so real that it’s simply too much for some users.

Also don’t forget about the actual real-life situation: normally you sit in your chair watching a screen, your eyes perfectly know what's happening, and so do your hands. In VR your eyes, your main sensors are teleported to a virtual world and the rest of your body, well, it still sits in your room as it normally does. Would you work with that?

It’s a very sensitive topic to discuss and we think VR porn, from the user’s point of view, currently crosses the line of virtual porn and virtual prostitution. Not saying that it’s a good or bad thing, but the super-reality of VR porn its clearly more than a passive one-off consumption of porn that we used to. Not sure the current users are ready for this, or can handle the outcomes.

What do you think?
